The Snowy Owl–also known as the Arctic Owl, Snowy White Owl, and White Owl–is one of the most easily identified but least understood owls in the world.

Award-winning author and photographer Paul Bannick delves into the natural history of this owl species, including the latest research, providing readers with comprehensive yet accessible looks at their preferred habitat, hunting and feeding behavior, mating and nesting actions, owlets and fledglings, and more.

This beautiful book follows Bannick’s bestselling titles, The Owl and the Woodpecker and Owl, providing fans with another emotionally rich photographic portfolio and engaging, informative text.

Excerpt from “Range, Habitat, & Movements”

The Snowy Owl is usually categorized as a diurnal owl, meaning that it is active during the day, but the truth is far more complicated. Since the owls nest in places that experience months of nonstop daylight, they must hunt when the sun is out, but birds that remain in the Arctic during the winter must be active in the dark as well. Are they thus also nocturnal?

According to my observations, which have spanned all four seasons, they clearly become more active in periods of low light. In seasons when the sun sets, they become active at dusk and begin roosting just after sunrise. That said, they are often more active during the day if nighttime weather makes capturing their target prey more difficult, such as when freezing nighttime temperatures on barren ground make rodents less active on the surface. My observations match those of researchers across the United States and Canada who have found that the vast majority of Snowy Owl activity occurs between the early evening and the early morning, although weather, prey availability, and other factors can impact this behavior. Even during the Arctic summer, when the sun never sets, they continue to prefer the hours when one might expect darkness. When Snowy Owls are not hunting, they typically roost on the ground or, where available, on the tops of buildings.
